Modular air-to-air equipment AB System

AB-System Equipment

The Borealis AB system comprises a set of modular elements that allow designers to flexibly assemble compact air-to-air equipment, precisely tailored to its function within the installation.

The system enables the design of machines with variable airflows and power outputs, suited for recirculation installations with mixing or 100% outdoor air systems, with the option to incorporate various types of energy recovery units (static, rotary…).

Experts agree that the true efficiency of a thermal system lies in closely matching the machine’s performance to the installation’s requirements, as each case is unique. Borealis AB equipment offers a superior level of flexibility that allows the designer to adapt the machine’s performance to the specific needs of the project through a modular system based on a common platform.

In this way, we refer to the AB equipment as a “system.”

Description

ENCLOSURE

The enclosure of AB units consists of:

  • Structure made of anodized aluminum profile with thermal bridge break.
  • Removable sandwich-type closure panels formed by two lacquered galvanized steel sheets with a PIR thermal-acoustic insulation core, 45 mm thick.
  • Laminated steel base.
  • Stainless steel drainage trays.
  • Galvanized steel interior partitions and base (optionally lacquered).

This type of construction offers these advantages:

  • Easy maintenance accessibility, as there are no panels that need to support the structure.
  • Good thermal and acoustic insulation due to both the filler material and its weight.
  • Flexibility to adapt machines to the space or customer requirements.
  • Great durability.

Other features:

  • Double-position closures: for tool use or quick manual opening to facilitate maintenance tasks.
  • Double gasket type flange + gap.
  • Handles on frequently used panels.

VENTILATION TRAIN

The design of the ventilation modules of AB units always takes into account different possibilities:

  • High or low available pressure.
  • Internal centrifugal fans, plug-fans, or reaction fans.
  • External EC axial fans with pressure control by variable speed. Centrifugal fans as an option.
  • Different power levels depending on the other modules and accessories incorporated into the machine that may create pressure loss in the air circuit.

FILTRATION

The filtration options for AB units are as broad as the market can offer:

  • Filter sections can equip as many filtration stages as desired.
  • Fans are selected based on the filter pressure loss, in addition to the other machine elements, ensuring the necessary available pressure for ducts.
  • Common filtration options include G and F filters, HEPA, electronic, activated carbon, etc.

Access to the filter box is quick and easy. The filtration modules are of standard size.

REFRIGERATION SYSTEM

The options offered by the AB range regarding the refrigeration system are very extensive:

  • Recirculation systems: cooling only or heat pump.
  • 100% outside air systems.
  • Combination of the above with refrigeration-based dehumidification with a dedicated coil.

All of them with the possibility of equipping:

  • Inverter compressor group.
  • Electronic expansion valves.
  • Water condensation (single or mixed) for heat recovery in DHW production or pool heating.

To facilitate maintenance and repairs:

  • Refrigeration coils made of copper tubes with aluminum + magnesium alloy fins for high corrosion resistance.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The Borealis units include as standard:

  • Panel with main switch and protections for each motor.
  • Main control system board housed in the panel. Remote control.
  • Phase sequence detector.

If optionally selected, the panel houses:

  • Fan variable frequency drives.
  • Inverter compressor variable frequency drives.
  • Electronic expansion valve controllers.
  • UVA battery control and radiometer.

ENERGY RECOVERY

The possibilities of the AB modular system from the point of view of energy recovery are very broad:

  • Energy recovery from exhaust air through:
    • Static air-to-air crossflow exchangers.
    • Sensible heat rotary exchangers, enthalpic, or sorption type.
    • Refrigeration recovery
  • Heat recovery generated by the refrigeration group to water condensers (preheating DHW, pool heating).
  • Desuperheaters for high temperature hot water production.

CONTROL SYSTEM

The control system used by Borealis for most of its units, including the AB modular series, is a DDC (Digital Direct Control), fully programmable.

The hardware of this controller allows proportional control with IP and MODBUS integrated communication. It includes a web server with a page where machine parameters can be viewed and modified directly. It can be connected directly to the building’s router with only a connection cable required, enabling monitoring from any computer or mobile device (phone, tablet, etc.)

The software is Borealis’ own design and implementation, allowing total process control with continuous, agile updates and improvements.

One of the most interesting features of these controllers is their extensive compatibility for communication with external devices, either of the same or other manufacturers via CANBus, RS485 Master and Slave, Ethernet, and USB ports. The serial communication protocol used is MODBUS RTU, one of the most widely used globally.

Its broad configuration capabilities mean that this programmable controller can be used for any type of application, including parameter logging and consumption history (optional upon request).

PRESELECTION OF A TEAM AB

The following selection charts are published to inform the designer or specifier about the range’s possibilities and to help reconfigure the desired equipment. Of course, our technical department is available to assist with equipment selection based on the provided guidelines. In any case, the detailed technical data for the selected equipment, prepared in collaboration with our engineers, will be provided in the corresponding document once agreed upon.
