Borealis has manufactured a new climate control unit for the Sahrawi refugee camps in Tindouf (Algeria). This is the AHCE model, a drying unit with counterflow energy cooling, equipped with an electric resistance coil.
The camps are located in the heart of the desert, about 1,500 km southwest of the Algerian capital, Algiers, a vast area of sand and stone with no vegetation. The climate is extremely arid and harsh. In this context, the Association of Friends of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (RASD) in Álava, with funding from the Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council, has implemented a cooperative project to plant 2.5 hectares of Moringa oleifera and build a drying room for moringa leaves, a tree known for its high nutritional benefits and easy use by the local population. This room requires specific climate conditions.
To meet these needs, Borealis has custom-designed and manufactured a unit that dehumidifies the room, removing as much water as possible from the moringa leaves at a temperature that does not “burn” the leaves, rendering them unusable. Additionally, the unit controls temperature and humidity levels. The ultimate goal is to obtain dry leaves with minimal moisture content for further processing and packaging, preventing the growth of fungi, yeasts, microorganisms, etc.
The Association of Friends of the RASD of Álava is a non-governmental organization focused on solidarity, human rights, and development cooperation with the Sahrawi people.
